Northern Ireland Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins MLA has launched two new recruitment campaigns aimed at strengthening frontline operational and technical capacity across the region’s road network.
The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) is seeking to recruit Industrial Road Workers and Trainee Civil Engineering Assistants, roles described as essential to the maintenance, safety, and ongoing development of transport infrastructure throughout Northern Ireland.
The Industrial Road Worker campaign is targeting applicants to join operational teams based across all council areas. Successful candidates will carry out a wide range of maintenance duties designed to keep the road network safe and functioning effectively.
These duties include road defect repairs, gully cleansing, grass cutting, and general environmental maintenance. Roadworkers will also play a key role in winter service operations, including road gritting, and will be required to respond to incidents on the network to support safe traffic movement and reduce disruption.
DfI has emphasised the importance of these roles in maintaining essential public infrastructure and ensuring resilience during periods of adverse weather and high demand.
The Trainee Civil Engineering Assistant positions will be delivered through a Skills Academy in partnership with Belfast Met. The programme includes four weeks of paid pre-employment training designed to prepare participants for entry into the civil engineering sector.
On completion of training, participants may progress into roles such as road inspector, laboratory technician, or site supervisor. The programme also provides access to industry-recognised accredited qualifications, supporting structured career development within civil engineering and infrastructure delivery.
The recruitment campaigns form part of wider efforts to strengthen the skills pipeline within Northern Ireland’s infrastructure sector and to create clearer entry routes into technical and operational public service roles.
By combining direct recruitment with structured training through education partners, the Department aims to address workforce needs while supporting long-term capability building across the road maintenance and civil engineering functions.
