Digital transformation is picking up pace in the construction and engineering sectors, with professionals increasingly turning to technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline operations and drive innovation.
A recent industry survey conducted by Strata, a provider of digital time management and construction solutions, has revealed that nearly nine in ten professionals across construction and engineering have boosted their use of digital tools over the past year. The findings, based on responses from more than 250 professionals across over 170 companies in Ireland, the UK, and mainland Europe, highlight a significant shift towards more tech-driven workflows.
According to the report, around 70% of respondents are now using digital technologies to support smarter decision-making and promote innovation. Yet, challenges remain. Fragmented workflows continue to present the biggest barrier to widespread adoption, followed closely by time constraints, often due to limited training availability and the impact of ongoing labour shortages. Meanwhile, skills gaps point to the need for targeted upskilling and strategic recruitment in digital roles.
When it comes to AI, the survey suggests that awareness is growing, but depth of understanding is still limited. While 81% of respondents rate their AI knowledge as basic or moderate, half of the companies surveyed have yet to introduce formal AI training. Nevertheless, more than 70% believe AI will play a pivotal role in shaping the industry’s future.
Sustainability is also emerging as a top priority, with 85% of professionals expecting it to become increasingly important over the next one to three years. However, despite this growing focus, only 5% of respondents report meaningful progress in applying digital tools for sustainability efforts, such as carbon footprint tracking or whole-life cycle assessments.
The findings point to a sector in transition, one that is actively embracing digital solutions but still working to overcome legacy issues, knowledge gaps, and operational inertia. As AI capabilities mature and sustainability standards rise, investment in digital skills and streamlined workflows is likely to become essential for construction and engineering firms aiming to remain competitive.
