As technology becomes increasingly important across construction projects, digital skills are opening up new roles for young people interested in combining construction knowledge with technology.
From Building Information Modelling (BIM) and digital surveying to drones, 3D design and project management software, technology is changing how construction projects are designed, planned and delivered. This is one of the areas highlighted by the Youth in Construction theme at this year's Construction Jobs Expo, which will showcase the different entry points available to the next generation of construction professionals.
Digital construction involves using technology and digital information to improve different stages of a construction project. This can begin during the design and planning stage and continue through construction, project management and the operation of completed buildings.
BIM is one example. It allows teams to create and manage detailed digital representations of buildings and infrastructure. Architects, engineers, contractors and other professionals can use shared information to understand how different elements of a project fit together and identify potential problems earlier.
Technology is creating demand for people who understand both construction processes and digital tools. Careers can include BIM technician, digital construction specialist, CAD technician, digital surveyor, project coordinator and construction data analyst.
Drones and surveying technology are also being used to capture information from construction sites, monitor progress and survey difficult-to-access areas. Meanwhile, 3D design and digital project management platforms are helping teams plan, communicate and coordinate complex projects.
Young people do not have to choose between a practical construction career and a technology-focused career. There are opportunities to combine practical knowledge with digital expertise, creating career paths that may look very different from traditional ideas of working in construction.
Someone with an interest in construction methods, for example, could develop their skills in BIM or digital design. A student interested in surveying could combine technical knowledge with digital mapping, drones and data. These combinations demonstrate why digital skills are becoming increasingly relevant across the sector.
Artificial intelligence is also becoming part of discussions around the future of construction. AI tools can assist with analysing project information, identifying patterns, supporting planning and automating certain administrative tasks.
Technology does not remove the need for skilled people. Construction professionals still need to understand projects, interpret information, solve problems and make decisions. Digital skills are therefore most useful when combined with communication, teamwork, critical thinking and practical construction knowledge.
Students interested in construction can begin developing relevant digital skills before entering the industry. Familiarity with spreadsheets, CAD software, 3D modelling, data and digital collaboration tools can all be useful, depending on the career path being considered.
It is equally important to develop the skills that support successful construction teams. Communication, collaboration, reliability and attention to detail remain valuable across both site-based and digital roles.
The Youth in Construction theme is one of four themes shaping this year's Construction Jobs Expo. The focus recognises that the next generation of construction professionals will work across a sector that combines traditional site skills with new technology and digital tools.
The expo will also put a spotlight on Women and Inclusion, giving visitors the opportunity to hear from women building careers across the sector and companies supporting greater inclusion. Mental Health will address the pressures associated with construction, including long hours and tight deadlines, with talks focused on looking after yourself and your crew.
Apprenticeships form the fourth theme, highlighting routes that allow young people to earn while they qualify and meet training providers directly.
Construction Jobs Expo 2026 takes place at the RDS Dublin, Shelbourne Hall, on Saturday, 17 October 2026, from 11am to 4pm. Admission is completely free, with opportunities to meet employers, discover active career opportunities, attend expert seminars and find out more about different routes into construction and engineering.
