A major milestone has been reached on the Adare Bypass project, with the Sisk Sorensen Joint Venture completing the installation of massive steel bridge girders on the River Maigue Bridge. The 15-day lifting programme used one of the largest crawler cranes in Ireland and the UK, highlighting the scale and precision required to deliver one of the project’s most significant structures.
Watch the video to see the huge crane in action during the installation of the steel girders on the River Maigue Bridge.
The River Maigue Bridge is a 210-metre, three-span structure with a 94-metre clear central span over the River Maigue. Around 2,500 tonnes of steel, fabricated in Italy, have been incorporated into the bridge.
The complex installation programme required detailed planning, specialist lifting equipment and extensive temporary works. Moving and positioning the massive steel components presented a significant logistical challenge for the project team.
The bridge is the largest structure among the 12 bridges being delivered as part of the Adare Bypass. With the girder installation now completed, work can progress towards the next stages of construction, including the bridge deck, waterproofing, parapets and road surfacing.
The River Maigue Bridge forms part of the 7-kilometre Adare Bypass, which is Phase 1A of the wider Foynes to Limerick Road project. The €150 million scheme is designed to remove up to 80% of through-traffic from Adare village.
The project is targeting completion by June 2027, ahead of the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor. Once completed, the bypass is expected to significantly improve traffic conditions in the village while strengthening connections across the wider region.
Projects such as the Adare Bypass demonstrate the range of skills required across Ireland's construction and engineering industry. Major infrastructure schemes depend on engineers, project managers, quantity surveyors, site managers, plant operators, skilled tradespeople, logistics specialists and many other professionals working together.
