Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Sligo offers a Level 6 Higher Certificate in Construction Economics. This add-on course is specifically designed for professionals currently working in the construction industry who are seeking to use the experience and knowledge gained to obtain employment in a wide variety of areas such as Site Surveyors, Estimators, Site Clerks, Materials Managers, Sales Representatives and Quantity Surveying Technicians with Contractors, Sub-Contractors, Construction Specialists and Materials Suppliers.

The programme equips graduates with a broad skills base for the management of construction projects, placing a strong emphasis on cost control. In today's competitive environment, the ability to manage budgets, and efficiently control labour, plant, and materials from project inception to completion, is vital. This course prepares graduates to fulfil the critical role of managing construction costs within a rapidly evolving industry.

The curriculum is developed in close collaboration with contractors, sub-contractors, and professional organisations to ensure it reflects the current needs of the workplace. It also provides a direct route into the Quantity Surveying profession, leading to an accredited qualification.


Programme Delivery and Key Skills

This two-year, part-time programme is delivered entirely via online distance learning, offering maximum flexibility for working professionals. It consists of 12 modules delivered over four semesters.

  • Estimating and Programming Software

  • Construction Law and Contract Administration

  • Cost Planning and Control

Supported Online Learning

ATU Sligo provides a fully supported online learning environment. Students are not required to purchase any software, as they will be granted remote access to the university's on-campus PCs or can download free student licences. All course materials, recorded lectures, and assessments are accessible through the Moodle course management system, allowing students to learn from anywhere in the world with an internet connection.
