A new statistical release from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) reveals that the Irish construction sector added over €14 billion to the economy in 2024. The report, "Construction: A National Accounts Perspective 2024," provides a detailed overview of the industry's performance, highlighting both growth and areas for future development.

According to the findings, the sector's Gross Value Added (GVA) increased by 6% to €14.3 billion in 2024. The largest subsector was Electrical, Plumbing & Other Construction Installation Activities, which accounted for 28% of the total GVA, followed closely by the construction of residential and non-residential buildings. This demonstrates the critical role that specialized trades play in the industry's overall economic contribution.

Despite a slight dip in investment in dwellings as a percentage of Modified Gross National Income (GNI*), the report noted that investment in dwellings has risen by €11 billion since 2020. This indicates a significant, sustained effort to address housing needs, even as growth leveled off in 2024.

Employment and The Bigger Picture
The report also brought positive news on the employment front, with a 2.8% increase in total employment in the sector, bringing the total number of people employed to over 171,000. This growth was primarily driven by the Construction of Buildings subsector. Key occupations seeing a high demand included Electricians & Electrical Fitters, Carpenters & Joiners, and other Construction & Building Trades.

While the numbers show a healthy contribution to the Irish economy, the report also offers a broader perspective. The size of the construction sector relative to Ireland’s domestic economy stood at 4.5% of GNI*, placing Ireland third-lowest among EU member states. This suggests there is significant potential for further growth. The continued demand for skilled workers, particularly in key trades, points to a strong future for the industry.
