The Government has approved to advance a number of measures to promote careers in construction.

A budget of €750,000 has been allocated to advance the recently published Careers in Construction report.

This includes a peer-to-peer social media campaign to dispel myths surrounding careers in construction and a campaign to advise skilled construction workers abroad of the opportunities in Ireland and the pipeline of work in construction.

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD, who is in London to meet Irish construction workers working on sites across the United Kingdom to discuss the motivations for staying abroad, as well as barriers to returning home, said:

“It is essential we continue to support people entering the sector.  This is vital to meeting our Housing for All targets and to ensure we address the most significant challenge our generation is facing.

“There are a number of misconceptions about a career in construction. There are fears construction is a boom and bust career, or that it is for a certain gender, or a certain stage in their career.

“This funding will seek to dispel some of those myths. It is designed to ensure that people considering construction or upskilling from their current role in the sector know the investment the State is making in this overall area over the next decade, and also that we are changing how we deliver housing and large infrastructural projects through Modern Methods of Construction.”

In addition, the Department is looking at structural changes so that people are aware of and learning about construction careers including through apprenticeship at an earlier point in their education, working closely with the Department of Education, National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and professional representative organisations.

New resources relating to Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) are also being developed through Skillnet Ireland, which will highlight the new opportunities in this growing area.

 Minister Harris added:

“We also know Irish construction workers are in high demand. Many left Ireland during the economic crash and have not returned and are now working on sites across the world.

“A part of this funding will be used to engage with construction workers abroad to assess the motivations for moving abroad and establish any barriers to coming home.

“We know many are living in the United Kingdom. Today, I will meet a small number of them to discuss the opportunities that Ireland can offer to people seeking a

International Women's Day is a time to celebrate the remarkable achievements and resilience of women across various walks of life. Among the many industries where women are leaving an indelible mark, the construction sector stands out as a domain once deemed the exclusive territory of men. Yet, a seismic shift is underway, as an increasing number of women are donning hard hats, shattering stereotypes, and redefining what it means to be a force in the construction industry.

The rise of women in construction is a testament to their unwavering determination, skill, and passion for a field that has long been perceived as a bastion of masculine dominance. These trailblazers are not only breaking down barriers but also reshaping the very foundations upon which the industry operates, bringing fresh perspectives, innovative approaches, and a commitment to excellence that is second to none.

From project managers overseeing intricate construction sites to skilled tradeswomen wielding tools with precision, women in construction are proving their mettle every day. They are dismantling outdated notions that construction is solely a man's domain, demonstrating that strength, resilience, and technical prowess know no gender boundaries.

Moreover, women in construction are championing diversity and inclusion within their ranks, fostering collaborative environments where different perspectives are valued and leveraged to drive innovation. They are mentoring and inspiring the next generation of female construction professionals, creating a supportive network that empowers and encourages aspiring women to pursue careers in this dynamic industry.

Yet, the path to true gender parity in the construction sector is not without its challenges. Women continue to face unique obstacles, including gender-based discrimination, limited access to training and advancement opportunities, and a persistent gender pay gap. Overcoming these barriers requires a collective effort from industry leaders, policymakers, and society as a whole.

On this International Women's Day, we celebrate the trailblazing women in construction who have defied conventions and paved the way for future generations. Their achievements serve as a powerful reminder that when given equal opportunities and support, women can excel in any field, leaving an indelible mark on the built environment that shapes our communities and cities.

As we honour their accomplishments, let us also renew our commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive construction industry, where women's contributions are valued, their voices are amplified, and their talents are nurtured. By fostering an environment that unleashes the full potential of women in construction, we can build a future where gender equality is not merely a goal but a reality, where structures are erected upon the foundations of diversity, inclusivity, and equal opportunity.

On this International Women's Day, let us raise our hard hats in tribute to the women in construction who are reshaping skylines, redefining possibilities, and inspiring generations to come. Their unwavering spirit and dedication serve as a powerful reminder that when women are empowered, the world becomes a more prosperous, sustainable, and equitable place for all.

As the Irish construction sector reflects on the trials of 2023, a newfound sense of cautious optimism permeates the industry. Despite facing persistent challenges such as inflation, material shortages, and skilled labour deficits, recent indicators suggest a shift towards a brighter future.

Reports from industry surveys and financial institutions reveal a growing confidence among construction companies, with a majority expressing positivity about the sector's health. Noteworthy forecasts predict significant growth in construction output and housing completions for 2024, hinting at a promising trajectory.

In 2023, amidst economic pressures, the sector witnessed notable transactions, particularly in multi-use developments spanning residential, commercial, and retail spaces. Refinancing activities also saw an uptick, especially concerning assets undergoing completion or defect liability periods.

Looking ahead to 2024, the momentum in construction financing is expected to continue, fueled by improved material availability and cost certainty. The focus is likely to extend to fit-out, refurbishment, and alteration projects, driven in part by anticipated revisions to energy efficiency regulations. The directive aims to transform existing buildings into zero-emission structures gradually, posing challenges and opportunities for property owners and tenants alike.

While the future appears promising, challenges persist, including inflation and supplier stress. However, the overall outlook remains positive, with the industry poised for growth.

The government is launching an ambitious plan to encourage Irish construction workers living abroad to return home and contribute to the construction industry. Higher Education Minister Simon Harris has allocated €750,000 to kickstart a campaign aimed at boosting the number of men and women working in construction across the nation.

Construct vital new infrastructure and communities

Minister Harris emphasizes the urgent need for an additional 50,000 tradespeople and professionals across all construction disciplines over the next decade to meet soaring housing demand. "There are a number of Irish workers with exceptional talents working outside of Ireland, and we need them here helping us construct vital new infrastructure and communities," the minister stated.

Come home and help build a home

Central to the strategy is an outreach program targeting Irish construction emigrants in hubs like London, New York, and Sydney. The campaign will utilize advertising channels tailored for professionals and tradespeople overseas, inviting them to reconnect over the opportunities and benefits of re-establishing roots at home. Harris spoke about asking Irish workers who live abroad to "come home and help build a home."

Incentives for a move back to Ireland

To maximize appeal, the Higher Education Department will directly engage the expatriate construction community - asking what workplace improvements, lifestyle supports, or policy adjustments could create compelling incentives for a move back to Ireland. While financial bonuses are currently not being offered, the government hopes to unlock other levers to encourage workers to return.

Construction Jobs Expo

We at Construction Jobs Expo fully support that initiative and believe that bringing skilled countrymen and women back could prove transformative. That's why Construction Jobs Expo enthusiastically welcomes emigrants considering their return at our upcoming Construction Jobs Expo in May.

Construction Jobs Expo takes place at the RDS on 18th May, 2024 and gathers Ireland's top construction employers, training bodies, and policy leaders. Global professionals returning from abroad can rekindle industry connections, interview for premier roles with flexible ramp-up timelines, and access exclusive repatriation advice sessions all under one roof.

With quality construction talent in such high demand domestically, this  government initiative signals major momentum ahead for rapidly accelerating hiring across Ireland's building and infrastructure sectors.

Register here for FREE ADMISSION to the Construction Jobs Expo today and meet your next employer. Together, let's build a better Ireland.
